Yarra City Council has given priority to upgrading footpaths within the Municipality as part of its walking strategy. Recently Council completed footpath upgrades in Brunswick , Smith and Hoddle Streets to improve disability access on these key pedestrian sites.
The works to these three streets, which costs around $150,000, included:
Mayor of Yarra City Council, Cr Jackie Fristacky, said it was important that Council continue to work towards making all local footpaths accessible.
" Footpaths are public spaces. Their primary role is to provide access for all people to move along freely and without obstruction," she said.
"We have made a commitment to improving the accessibility of all local civic assets, and these footpath upgrades contribute to achieving that goal."
City of Yarra Councillor and Chair of Yarra's Disability Advisory Committee, Cr Kathleen Maltzahn, said these upgrades would assist everyone using these footpaths.
"The smoother surfacing will ease wheelchair travel, aid parents with prams, and assist people using walking frames. The tactile sections of the footpaths will assist people who are vision impaired," she said.
"Before undergoing these works, Council consulted the Disability Advisory Committee (DAC), to ensure the best outcome was achieved.
"Yarra's DAC has assisted Council in identifying important access issues across the municipality and has provided valuable guidance on how to best improve these areas.
"DAC has been instrumental in helping Council achieve this impressive end result and we value their input in helping Council to make Yarra more accessible for everyone."
