Yarra City Council today welcomed the announcement to abolish public transport zone 3, made by the Minister for Transport, Peter Batchelor.
The Mayor of Yarra City Council, Cr Jackie Fristacky, said this was a very positive initiative and a solid step in the right direction to increasing public transport use.
"Many people living in zone three do not catch public transport because it is too expensive," she said.
"Catching public transport to and from work, five days a week, from zone 3 to the inner suburbs costs around $60.
"Traffic congestion, limited parking and fuel emissions in the City of Yarra increase as more people drive into the area or through the area from the outer suburbs rather than catching public transport.
"Council has been active in lobbying for zone fares to be abolished and for public transport to be more accessible and equitable
"Although I am pleased the Minister has moved forward with this initiative, it is important that zone one fares do not increase as a trade off.
"The next step for Government is to abolish zone 2 and have a single fare, making public transport more affordable for those who have to travel longer distances.
"This will further help reduce congestion and assist sustainability."
