Team Yarra in the 24 Hour Mega Swim
Councillors and staff from the City of Yarra will swim non-stop for 24 hours in the 24 Hour Mega Swim from 23 to 24 February at the Fitzroy Pool.
The 24 Hour Mega Swim is an annual event, now in its seventh year, that raises funds for the MS Limited’s “Go For Gold” scholarship program. It involves teams of up to 15 people swimming continuous laps in a 50m pool for 24 hours.
City of Yarra Mayor, Cr Jenny Farrar, said she was proud to see a rise in Council’s participation this year, with double last year’s amount of Yarra team members signed up for 2007.
“Yarra Council has supported the 24 Hour Mega Swim every year since its inception and last year our team raised over $2,100,” she said.
“This year, Yarra will enter two teams and we hope to raise even more for this great cause. I congratulate all our team for their dedication.”
The 24 Hour Mega Swim is organised by Carol Cooke, who first ran the event in 2001 at the Fitzroy Pool with just ten teams. The event has successfully grown, with 29 teams last year raising more than five times the amount of the inaugural event.
Carol lives with MS herself, and created the 24 Hour Mega Swim after recognising MS Limited’s challenge to raise funds for its scholarship program. The “Go For Gold” scholarships are designed to support people with MS reach their goals in areas such as education, sport, music and the arts.
Yarra Councillor, Jackie Fristacky will be competing in the event for the second time and is keen to achieve even more laps than last year.
“I am delighted to support Carol Cooke and MS Limited in this fantastic event. It is great to see so many Yarra staff joining the team and I look forward to us having a record number of laps and sponsorships,” she said.
The 24 Hour Mega Swim will commence at 6.00pm on Friday 23 February and will finish at 6.00pm the following Day. To support this event, please contact Carol Cooke at cazc@bigpond.com or on 0417 360 883.
