Yarra and Stonnington launch a Litter Blitz

Yarra and Stonnington City Councils today launched a Litter Blitz and education campaign to clean up some of Melbourne’s most popular shopping and litter hotspots.

Over the next fortnight, education officers will hit Smith, Brunswick and Chapel Streets to educate the community about the effect litter has on the environment, and to offer incentives such as free Metcards and ashtrays to those who do the right thing.

In the second half of November, Victoria Police and Council officers will conduct a litter enforcement blitz, issuing on-the-spot fines to litter bugs while continuing the education campaign on the streets.

The campaign forms a part of the wider Lower Yarra Litter Strategy, a partnership between four Councils – Boroondara, Melbourne, Stonnington and Yarra – and the State Government to reduce litter in the Lower Yarra region.

Yarra Mayor Cr Amanda Stone said Council, through its Green Star Business Program, was also working with local cafes, pubs, restaurants and retail stores to help them reduce their waste, and combat litter.

Both Councils will target cigarette butt litter, using material from Sustainability Victoria’s “Don’t be a Tosser” campaign to help educate shoppers and businesses in the area.

“Many people simply don’t realise, that aside from being an eyesore in our streets and parks, the cigarette butt or plastic bottle they drop in the street eventfully ends up in our waterways,” Cr Stone said.

“The cocktail of chemicals in thousands of cigarette butts causes untold damage to marine environments and plastic waste clogs waterways drainage infrastructure.”

“We want to get people talking rubbish – to literally start a conversation about litter,” she said.

“This month’s Litter Blitz will be a chance for shoppers, businesses and residents to get advice about keeping our shopping strips and waterways clean and attractive.”
