To celebrate the refurbishment of the heritage listed Fitzroy Football Club Grandstand, Yarra City Council invites the community to a free family fun day in Edinburgh Gardens on Sunday 2 August.
With rides, show bags, sports activities, historical displays, giveaways and guided tours of the upgraded facilities, the day is sure to have something for everyone. Activities will take place from 11am to 2pm, followed by a football match at 3pm.
Mayor of Yarra City Council, Cr Amanda Stone said Council was pleased to have breathed new life into the improved grandstand and club rooms.
“Council has restored and upgraded the 1888 grandstand to bring the historic building up to contemporary sporting standards,” Cr Stone said.
“To celebrate the completion of these works, we will be holding a fun-filled day of activities at WT Peterson Oval and we hope to see the ground filled with people enjoying the event,” she said.
“The Grandstand and WT Peterson Oval in Edinburgh Gardens have been a community focal point for Fitzroy for more than a century, and we want them to continue to be used and valued well into the next century.
“It is of course the homeland of the Fitzroy Football Club, who played VFL matches at the ground up until 1966 and many a passionate supporter saw their team thrash it out on this local turf.
“Council is pleased to have kept the integrity of the heritage-listed grandstand intact, whilst also vastly improving the functionality of the facility.”
Designed by architect Nathaniel Billing, the Grandstand was originally funded by cricket and football club gate takings. It remained in basically unrenovated condition up until last year, when council began its $700,000 refurbishment works, which include:
Council acknowledges the support of the Fitzroy Junior Football Club, Fitzroy Football Club, and the Edinburgh Cricket Club in presenting the family fun day.
