Yarra City Council last night approved a $350 million redevelopment of the Epworth Hospital in Richmond, which will provide for an additional 248 hospital beds, and an extra 17 operating theatres.
The redevelopment, which is expected to take at least six years to complete, will increase the height of the hospital’s Erin Street buildings from three to nine storeys, and add another three levels to the Bridge Road building.
Mayor Cr Amanda Stone said the redevelopment of the nearly 90-year-old hospital would increase the number of emergency patients treated each year by 8000 to 36,000, with up to an additional six ambulance arrivals able to be accepted each day.
“It is great news for our local community and for wider Melbourne that this well-regarded hospital is going to have even more capacity to care for sick and injured people,” Cr Stone said.
She said the Council acknowledged the objections of nearby residents about overshadowing over the rear areas of properties along Leigh Place (fronting Lennox Street).
“Council has placed conditions on the permits to reduce the impact of the building on surrounding homes, such as requiring the use of low reflective glass at the upper levels of the building and a further setback of a roof top plant,” Cr Stone said.
Council has also requested that the Department of Transport investigate what could be done to provide for greater tram capacity near the hospital on Bridge Road.
As part of the redevelopment, a new four level basement car park would be built under the Erin Street buildings, joining up with the existing Bridge Road basement car park.
There will be a new vehicle access point into the hospital from a widened Leigh Place, and landscaping works along Erin Street (where on-street car spaces will be removed) and Bridge Road.
