Edinburgh Gardens will play host to hundreds of cyclists and their bikes when Yarra’s second annual Blessing of the Bikes is held on Sunday 4 October.
Yarra Mayor Cr Amanda Stone said the event was a celebration of cycling, with blessings from a number of faiths.
Jointly organised by Yarra City Council and the Anglican Diocese of Melbourne, the event will be held in the gardens, near the rotunda in St Georges Road, from 12pm-1pm.
“Yarra has the highest rate of cycling of any Victorian municipality, so it makes sense that we would be home to this celebration of all things cycling,” Cr Stone said.
“All cyclists and bicycle enthusiasts, including serious riders and families with children on tag-alongs and tricycles, are welcome to enjoy an hour relaxing in the park,” she said.
“The event will include live music from local musicians and members of the Brunswick Parish A Cappella group, a Welcome to Country from a Wurundjeri elder and a group blessing from the celebrants,” she said.
Blessing of bicycles and cyclists occurs in many parts of the world, most notably in Italy which has a Patron Saint for Cyclists, Madonna Del Ghisallo, who was proclaimed in 1949 with a chapel near Como. In France, the tiny town of Lasbastide-d’Armagnac has an 11th Century church, Notre Dame des Cyclistes, dedicated to the Tour de France and to cyclists.
Both cities honour cyclists past and present and contain mementos left there by the world’s best cyclists for good luck.
“As we’re a multicultural society here in Yarra, we’re keen to have all of our community involved so they feel safe, accepted and protected when on their bikes, so we welcome everyone to come,” Cr Stone said
She said the event was a wonderful prelude to this year’s Melbourne Cycling Festival, which runs from 14-18 October.
