Alphington Park Certified a Sustainable Park

Yarra’s Alphington Park has been officially certified as one of Victoria’s most environmentally sustainable parks.

Yarra is one of only two Victorian councils to have a park environmentally certified by Sustainable Gardening Australia under a new program designed to promote sustainable practices across the state.

Yarra Mayor Cr Amanda Stone said participating in the program demonstrated Council was reducing its impact on the environment through careful environmental management.

“Council’s parks and gardens staff have been trained in the latest sustainability practices, which are now being put into practice right across Yarra,” Cr Stone said.

“We set ourselves the goal of reaching zero net carbon emissions by 2012, and programs like these are instrumental to reaching that goal,” she said.

“Simple things - like using the cuttings from tree pruning as mulch - reduce our reliance on commercial producers, cut the level of greenhouse gasses we generate in the process and save us time and money.”

Alphington Park incorporates a range of sustainable features and practices. Council’s use of recycled materials, drought-tolerant plants, and lawn substitutes, such as ground covers, native grasses and drought-tolerant turf, were some of the reasons the park was awarded its sustainable certification.

Over the past two years, Council has spent $69,000 on maintenance and planting at Alphington Park. This included planting more than 9,000 native plants on the park’s steep embankment bordering the Yarra River to improve biodiversity and reduce soil erosion in the area.

As part of the certification process, Council’s parks and gardens staff attended a range of sustainability training courses and seminars, learning about reducing water usage, cutting carbon emissions, and effectively managing resources.

Alphington Park, in Parkview Road, was then required to submit to a range of sustainability checks.

Council is now assessing which other parks and gardens across Yarra may be suitable for certification by Sustainable Gardening Australia.
