Celebrating life across Yarra, across cultures

Seniors will be treated to a vibrant display of music, colour and culture at the upcoming Celebration of Life multicultural event at the Collingwood Town Hall on Monday 12 October.

Residents from 13 nursing homes across Melbourne’s inner suburbs will visit the Town Hall as part of the Victorian Seniors Festival.

Yarra Mayor Cr Amanda Stone said performers would take nursing home residents on an entertaining cultural tour using music and dance.

“This is a celebration of life and a celebration of culture across Yarra,” Cr Stone said.

“We want to help residents remain engaged in their community as they grow older, which is important if we want to continue to build a diverse, happy and healthy community,” she said.

Paul Brophy, manager of Clifton Hill aged care facility Sambell Lodge, helped kick-start these themed Celebration of Life events back in April 2007.

“It is a real community grass roots event,” Mr Brophy said.

“These events provide access to networks and allow people to socialise with the rest of the community.”

Performances on the day will include West Papuan singers and dancers, Vietnamese elders, the Sudanese Women’s Choir, and many more.

This is one of the many free events that will be held throughout the City of Yarra as part of this year’s Victorian Seniors Festival in October.

It will be the ninth Celebration of Life event held since April 2006, with the most recent event attracting more than 300 people.

The Celebration of Life will be held on Monday 12 October from 1.00pm to 3.00pm at the Collingwood Town Hall, 140 Hoddle Street, Abbotsford.
