A safer speed limit to be introduced in Princes Hill

Princes Hill will become safer for residents and road users later this month, with Yarra Council receiving VicRoads’ approval to introduce a 40km/h speed limit on local streets.

The 40 km/h limit will apply to the area in Princes Hill bounded by Park Street to the north, Macpherson Street to the south, Lygon Street to the east and Bowen Crescent to the west.

Mayor Cr Amanda Stone said the approval of the 40 km/h speed limit in Princes Hill was another important step in Council’s plan to introduce reduced speed limits throughout Yarra.

“Reducing speed on our local streets encourages safer driving and a safer environment for our residents,” Cr Stone said.

“Reducing the speed limit by just a small amount can have a significant impact, with research from the Monash University Accident Research Centre showing that pedestrians hit at 40km/h are 75% less likely to die than those hit at 50km/h,” she said.

“Princes Hill is a particularly important area for cars to travel at a safe and practical speed because it is home to the Redmond Park retirement development, Princes Hill Primary School in Pigdon Street, and Princes Hill Secondary College in Arnold Street.

“A 40km/h limit already applies adjacent to the primary school in Pigdon Street and extending the speed limit throughout the neighbourhood will further increase safety for children, older people and the wider community.

“Creating a safer environment through a reduced speed limit will also encourage and support residents who choose to cycle or walk, which helps the environment.

“This is a key goal in our Environment Strategy and draft Bicycle Strategy due to the environmental, health and economic benefits of these forms of travel.”

In 2006, Council undertook a Local Area Traffic Management (LATM) study of the area and consulted with local residents, finding strong support for a 40km/h speed limit in Princes Hill.

In 2008, Council introduced a number of traffic calming measures to the precinct, including speed humps and traffic islands, before applying to VicRoads for approval of the 40km/h speed limit.

Thirty-one 40km/h speed signs will be installed at all entry points into the Princes Hill area at the end of October, after which the lower speed limit will become effective.

A 40 km/h speed limit now applies to approximately 70 per cent of Yarra’s local streets, with all local streets in Richmond, Cremorne and Burnley and some parts of Clifton Hill, Alphington, Abbotsford, North Fitzroy and Fitzroy being 40km/h.

As Council progressively undertakes LATMs across Yarra, it will continue to consult with local communities about reducing the speed limit in their precincts.
