Council seeks feedback for proposed Victoria Street Structure Plan

Yarra City Council is seeking community feedback about its preliminary ideas for the Victoria Street Structure Plan.

The proposed Structure Plan will cover the Victoria Street ‘activity centre’, which includes the shopping areas and other commercial and industrial areas along Victoria Street from Hoddle Street to the Yarra River. The Structure Plan will also include some adjoining areas, such as the North Richmond Housing Estate.

The proposed Victoria Street Structure Plan will deal with activity, buildings, transport and access, and public spaces.

The preliminary ideas have been developed in response to community feedback to Council’s Issues and Strategic Options Paper for Victoria Street, which was released in August 2008.

Mayor Cr Amanda Stone, said community input was very important in shaping a Structure Plan that reflects the needs and aspirations of the community.

“The Structure Plan will provide Council with a framework and relevant planning tools to manage the future of this important area.  It should help us ensure that future development is well-planned and meets community needs.

“We strongly encourage people to comment on Council’s preliminary ideas. Your feedback and suggestions will help shape the future of this fabulous precinct in Yarra.”

A public workshop will be held to present the preliminary ideas and discuss community responses.

When: Wednesday, 19 August 2009, 6.30pm to 8.30pm
Where: Community Room, Ground Floor, Main Building, Abbotsford Convent
RSVP: Janet Snyman, on 9205 5049 or strategicplanning@yarracity.vic.gov.au

On Saturday 8 August, a public display will be located in a tent at the south-east corner of Lennox Street and Victoria Street between 10.00am and 3.00pm. Council staff will be available to answer questions about the preliminary ideas for discussion.

The preliminary ideas are available on Council’s website, www.yarracity.vic.gov.au/consultation or can be viewed at any of Yarra’s five library branches.

Written submissions must be received by Friday, 28 August and sent to: Peter Mollison, Senior Strategic Planner, PO Box 168 Richmond 3121, or strategicplanning@yarracity.vic.gov.au.
