Two car parking bays outside the Fitzroy library will be converted into a bicycle-parking area in a trial of on-road bicycle parking in Yarra.
Mayor Cr Amanda Stone said the two car parks would be replaced by temporary kerbing and seven bike hoops, enough for 14 bikes, outside the library in Moor Street.
As part of the project which will be finalised by the end of June, bicycle hoops directly outside the entrance to the library will be removed, creating an uncluttered environment for pedestrians and people meeting outside the library.
“This is a trial of how Council can reclaim road surfaces that have previously been the preserve of cars and provide them for cyclists instead,” Cr Stone said.
“We are sending a clear message that cyclists are legitimate road users and their needs for parking should be met.
“The provision of on-road bicycle parking in Lygon Street outside Cinema Nova has proved extremely popular, and it is definitely a direction Yarra Council wants to head in.
“The experiences of our trial will feed into the investigations and consultations we undertake this year to find additional suitable locations for on-road bicycle parking in strip shopping strips.”
Cr Stone said the initiative would help foster cycling’s continued growth in Yarra, with a recent Council bike count revealing cycling numbers had
grown by 13% over the past twelve months, and by 111% since 2004.
“We’re keen to support Yarra residents who make the choice and effort to put their feet to the pedal rather than taking the easy option of driving everywhere,” Cr Stone said.
“The more cyclists we have, the better it is for our environment, our community’s health and the peace of our neighbourhoods,” she said.
The bike counts, which are undertaken every year at 24 intersections across Yarra during the morning peak from 7am-9am, found the busiest locations were:
Canning and Park Streets (Carlton) – 1035 bikes
Canning and Princes Streets (Carlton) – 849 bikes
And the biggest increases in bicycle traffic over the last 12 months were recorded at:
Nicholson and Richardson Streets (North Carlton) – up by 82 %
Alexandra Parade and Napier Street (Fitzroy) – up by 77%.
