Residents encouraged to Ride to Work on 14 October

Cyclists young and old are encouraged to get on their bikes for Ride to Work Day on Wednesday 14 October.

Council is supporting Ride to Work Day by hosting a free breakfast for participants at Mayors Park, Clifton Hill between 7am and 9am.

Cyclists can drop in for free tea, coffee and breakfast and go in the running to win one of five Crumpler bags or a three-month membership to Yarra’s Leisure Centres. Free bike maintenance and engraving by Victoria Police will also be available on the day.

Mayor Cr Amanda Stone said Ride to Work Day provided a great opportunity for Yarra residents to experience the many benefits of cycling.

“Cycling is a fantastic way to improve your health, save money on transport and help the environment,” Cr Stone said.

“Whether you are a beginner or an experienced rider, everyone can participate in the day and help celebrate Yarra’s strong cycling culture,” she said.

“We want to continue to establish cycling as the first choice of transport for Yarra residents and have outlined a bold vision to achieve this in our Draft Bike Strategy.

“The strategy aims to more than double the rate of Yarra residents cycling to work and construct five major separated on-road bicycle routes by 2015.

“Our community is invited to have their say on the strategy to help Yarra become the best cycling city in Australia.”

The Draft Bicycle Strategy can be viewed at the Richmond and Collingwood town halls, at Yarra’s five libraries or at www.yarracity.vic.gov.au/Consultation. Submissions about the draft strategy must be made before 22 October 2009.

For more information about Ride to Work Day or to register your participation with Bicycle Victoria, visit www.ride2work.com.au. All registered participants go in the draw to win a Trek 7.6FX bike valued at $1,999.
