Yarra City Council has organised a free breakfast on Victoria Street near the Victoria Gardens Shopping Centre between 7.00am to 9.00am, for all cyclists participating in National Ride to Work Day on Wednesday 17 October.
The event aims to encourage new riders to join the cycling community. It is also to reward people who leave their cars at home and use sustainable transport to travel to and from work regularly already.
Activities on the day include:
The Mayor of Yarra City Council, Cr Jenny Farrar, said Ride to Work Day was a great incentive for people to give cycling a go.
“Ride to Work Day is a fun way for new cyclists to learn how easy, cost-effective, environmentally-friendly and enjoyable cycling is,” she said.
“Although the City of Yarra has the highest number of people in Victoria using a bicycle to get to and from work every day, we want to continue to encourage more and more people to take up cycling as a form of transport.”
“The more people cycling to and from work every day means less traffic congestion on our roads and reduced air pollution caused by car exhausts.”
“There are also many health benefits associated with regular riding.”
The Mayor said Council was committed to continuing to support, facilitate and encourage cycling in Yarra.
“In addition to building infrastructure including dedicated bike paths and bike lanes, lobbying other levels of government and heavily promoting the use of sustainable transport, Council has been working closely with local businesses to encourage them to support sustainable transport options for both customers and employees,” she said.
“Yarra’s Ride to Work Day breakfast is free and everyone cycling is welcome to come along and enjoy themselves.”
“This event is a great opportunity for people who work locally in Yarra, or who would like to stop for a healthy breakfast and some fun on their way to work.
“I want to encourage everyone to get on their bikes on Wednesday 17 October and come along to the celebrations at Victoria Gardens,” she said.
Registering to attend is encouraged and you can do so on the Ride to Work Day website at www.ride2work.com.au. Further information on the event can also be found visiting www.yarracity.vic.gov.au .
