Yarra City Council welcomes today’s announcement by Premier John Brumby of funding to build a shared bridge and cycling path over Merri Creek.
The $785,000 project will involve construction of the cycling bridge and new path connections and will form part of the Victorian Government’s TravelSmart and Local Area Access Program Initiative which aims to improve local access and overcome barriers to walking, cycling and public transport.
In addition, Yarra and Darebin Councils will provide funding of $245,000 collectively, with a further $54,000 and 'in-kind' contribution from Melbourne Water.
Mayor Cr Amanda Stone said Yarra Council’s $125,000 contribution would provide for on-road and off-road connections to the bridge through North Fitzroy.
Cr Stone said the shared path bridge would be built as part of a Melbourne Water project to replace and realign an old water supply pipe that crosses Merri Creek near the Epping line train bridge on the border of North Fitzroy and Northcote.
She said the new bridge would provide the local community and cyclists using the Merri Creek Trail with an accessible link across the Merri Creek in North Fitzroy.
“The bridge was identified in the Merri Creek Trail Review, completed in November 2007, as a key opportunity for improving cycle and walking networks for local residents,” she said.
“The path bridge complements Council’s long term strategic vision for the Merri Creek Trail between Holden Street in North Fitzroy and Queens Parade in Clifton Hill.”
Melbourne Water is currently consulting the local community about the pipe replacement project, with works due to start in July 2009. Consultation on the bridge is expected to commence shortly.
