Yarra City Council will host a public forum later this month to explore future models for housing that are affordable, accessible, and secure for older people.
Professor Dimity Reed - architect, urban planner and international speaker on housing innovation - will lead the discussion on ways to meet the housing needs of older people in Yarra into the future.
City of Yarra Mayor, Cr Amanda Stone, said more attention must be paid to housing for older Australians to prevent a crisis in availability and affordability.
“With an ageing population, housing needs will change for a large section of the community in future years and it is critical that we plan for this change,” Cr Stone said.
“The cost of housing in inner Melbourne continues to rise, making it hard for some older people to downsize their home and still remain within their community, where they have social networks.”
“As more and more people choose to make Yarra their home, we are faced with the challenges of providing more housing whilst maintaining and improving the liveability of our city.
“We also seek to ensure the broad range of existing residents can stay here, so the rich diversity that provides Yarra’s distinctive character is retained.
“Relocating in older age can lead to people feeling isolated and overwhelmed by the unknown.
“As a council, we are committed to supporting our residents to continue living in Yarra where they have social connections, a familiar environment and a network of support services where they are known.”
This free forum will be held on Wednesday 18 February from 9.00am–2.00pm (registration from 8.30am) at the Richmond Town Hall, 333 Bridge Road, Richmond. Lunch will be provided.
People or community groups interested in attending are encouraged to RSVP for this event by contacting Access Yarra on 9205 5555.
