Council’s 2010 Community Grants program gets underway

The City of Yarra’s 2010 Community Grants program will open for applications later this month, with more than $500,000 to be shared amongst not-for-profit groups to run initiatives which improve the well-being of Yarra residents.

About $494,000 will be distributed amongst community programs via the Annual Grants program, and an additional $78,000 is available through the Social Support Grants.

Mayor Cr Amanda Stone said information sessions will be held around the municipality in coming weeks to inform applicants about the Grants program’s requirements and application process.

“We strongly encourage residents and community groups to attend an information session to make sure they are fully equipped to prepare a grants application,” Cr Stone said.

“Our grants program is all about supporting programs and activities which help foster a diverse, active and supportive community environment.

“Each year we are inundated with applications outlining amazing community programs worthy of our support.”

The following information sessions will be held:

Information Session 1      Friday 26 June 2009, 10.00am - 12.00pm
                                          Collingwood Town Hall
Information Session 2      Tuesday 30 June 2009,  6.00pm - 8.00pm
Richmond Town Hall, 333 Bridge Road

Vietnamese, Cantonese, Mandarin, Arabic and Dinka Interpreters will be present at these sessions and interpreters for other languages can be arranged by calling Jo Mason, Community Planner on 9205 5555.

Further information sessions will be held at housing estates and neighbourhood houses in Yarra during June and July.

The Annual Grants program provides funding for small to medium sized projects, activities and events that respond to the needs of Yarra residents. This funding is provided under the categories of Arts and Culture, Environment, Community Development, Sport and Recreation, Youth Services and Community Justice.

Funding is also available through the Social Support Grants program for new and existing initiatives aimed at supporting older people, people with a disability and carers to participate in community activities that enhance independence and improve general wellbeing. Typically these grants are made available to Senior Citizen groups, Neighbourhood Houses and Carer Groups.

The 2010 Community Grants Program Guidelines and Application forms will be available from 19 June 2009, and applications open on Monday 22 June. All applications must be submitted by 31 July 2009, with Council to make a decision on applications towards the end of the year.
