New Guide Map to Yarra’s Art Galleries Launched

Yarra City Council is supporting the municipality’s exciting and diverse gallery scene through the Gallery Guide map, launched by Mayor Cr Amanda Stone this week.

Making visual arts venues more accessible to the local community and visitors, the Gallery Guide includes a comprehensive list of City of Yarra’s galleries and suggests the best walking and cycling routes around the municipality to enjoy them all.

The Guide complements the Yarra gallery logo street signs, developed by Council in 2000. Seen throughout the municipality, these bold orange street signs direct residents and tourists to Yarra's contemporary art galleries.

Mayor Cr Amanda Stone said the City of Yarra is a major cultural centre and Council is pleased to be able to support the thriving local gallery scene.
“The City of Yarra is home to about 70 galleries, ranging from leading commercial galleries to artist-run spaces,” Cr Stone said.

“We are committed to maintaining and promoting a local environment in which the arts flourish, contributing to the vibrancy of our municipality, enhancing our residents’ quality of life, and contributing to the local economy,” she said.

“Our consultation with local galleries has confirmed that, with many of Yarra’s galleries tucked away in side streets and laneways, Council’s distinctive street signage is an important reference point for visitors and encourages greater awareness of galleries.

“As a result, Council has just completed an upgrade of these important signs – installing additional signs and replacing those that were damaged – to ensure their continued effectiveness.

“The new Gallery Guide, together with Council’s well-recognised signage, will help unlock this sometimes secret world of galleries so visitors can enjoy even more of the cultural treasures that our local area has to offer.”

The Gallery Guide is available on the Arts and Culture section of Council’s website. Hard copies are available by calling 9205 5555 or at Yarra Libraries and the Richmond and Collingwood Town Halls. The Guide will be available through galleries shortly.
