Community feedback invited on proposed $350 million redevelopment of Epworth Hospital

Epworth HealthCare has lodged planning applications for a $350 million redevelopment of its Richmond hospital with Yarra City Council.

Mayor Cr Amanda Stone said the proposed redevelopment would involve an expansion of the hospital’s busy emergency centre, and a 30% increase in hospital bed numbers.

Cr Stone said Council would hold an information session later this month, so local community members could find out more about what was being proposed.

The proposed redevelopment would involve increasing the maximum height of the hospital’s Erin Street buildings from three to eight storeys, and adding another three levels to the Bridge Road building.

“The Epworth Hospital has provided a vital, local health service for many years and is clearly keen to continue to do so in the long term,” Cr Stone said.

“Council’s role as the planning authority is try to balance the hospital’s desire to redevelop and expand its facility with the needs of the householders and businesses in the surrounding neighbourhood,” she said.

“The proposed increase in building heights would significantly change the local landscape, but we are confident the detailed planning issues can be worked through to the satisfaction of all parties.

“Council understands the hospital has already undertaken some informal consultation with local residents prior to lodging their plans with Council.”

According to the hospital, the redevelopment would provide for an additional 248 hospital beds (taking the total number to 777), an extra 17 operating theatres and 10 more emergency department beds.

The number of emergency patients treated each year would increase by 8000 to 36,000, with up to an additional six ambulance arrivals each day.

A new four level basement car park would be built under the Erin Street buildings, joining up with the existing Bridge Road basement car park, and resulting in 392 more on-site car spaces.

There would be a new vehicle access point into the hospital from a widened Leigh Place, and landscaping works along Erin Street (where 19 car spaces would be removed) and Bridge Road.

Cr Stone invited all interested community members to attend the information session at Richmond Town Hall on Tuesday 21 April from 6:00pm to 7:30pm.

The redevelopment plans can also be viewed at the Richmond Town Hall during office hours.

Community members who would like to find out more about the proposed redevelopment can contact Council’s Coordinator – Statutory Planning Matthew Cohen on 9205 5555 or at matthew.cohen@yarracity.vic.gov.au

Any submissions about the proposed plans should be lodged with Council by 7 May 2009.
