Melbourne and Yarra residents now have a helping hand with going green. The City of Melbourne, City of Yarra and energy partners have launched a new scheme that aims to take the confusion – and some of the cost – away from going green at home.
‘Energy saver- it all starts at home’ encourages renters and home-owners alike to go green by registering for a free energy audit.
Lord Mayor, Robert Doyle encourages all Melbourne and Yarra residents to take advantage of the council-led initiative.
“The City of Melbourne has been a leader in energy efficiency for some time and has set new benchmarks with its CH2 development. It’s now time to pass on this knowledge and experience to our residents,” he said.
Yarra Mayor Cr Amanda Stone said while many Yarra residents had led the way in creating sustainable housing, the Energy Savers Program would reach out to people who are not yet aware of, or can’t afford, the small changes that make a big difference to the environment.
“Energy Savers will create the critical mass needed to make a substantial impact on the environment, and help us reach Yarra’s goal of being carbon neutral by 2020,” Cr Stone said.
To establish the scheme, the Councils have undertaken a competitive process to select three energy providers that it is recommending to its residents - Brotherhood of St Laurence, Ecovantage and The Green Project.
Households that register for a free audit are eligible to receive:
Over the three-year lifecycle of the scheme, more than 40,000 homes are expected to be audited, equating to savings of more than 80,000 tonnes of CO2, not to mention massive reductions in energy expenditure.
“We all know that it’s high time to get a little smarter about how we use energy in the home, but making the necessary changes can be confusing and even daunting for some people,” the Lord Mayor said.
Cr Stone said the Councils had been keen to ensure the scheme would meet the needs of the cities’ large populations of renters and low-income households. “If we’re serious about making wholesale change, we’ve got to make sure the environmental tools and knowledge are shared equally,” Cr Stone said.
