The Premier of Victoria has recently appointed Sir Rod Eddington to undertake a needs assessment of transport options in the East West corridor of Metropolitan Melbourne – Council is seeking to provide information to the community regarding this process and what opportunities exist for submissions.
Yarra City Council is encouraging residents to make a submission to help scope the Eddington enquiry by the closing date of Thursday 31 May, and is holding a special public information session to help residents prepare their thoughts and submissions.
The information session, to be held at the Collingwood Town Hall at 7.00pm sharp on Tuesday 8 May 2007, will explain the assessment process, discuss key transport issues affecting the East-West corridor, and provide advice on making a formal submission.
The meeting will include information on the enquiry process by a senior officer from the Department of Infrastructure, a presentation by Chris Loader (Bus Association of Victoria) on what we know of travel demand in this region, and a question and answer session to assist participants.
City of Yarra Mayor, Cr Jenny Farrar said that the East-West Links Needs Assessment provides a very important opportunity for the community to have some input into future transportation solutions.
“The enquiry will look at transport issues in the East West corridor area north of central Melbourne and seeks responses that are integrated, strategic and regionally based,” she said.
“I strongly encourage the community to take up this vital opportunity to influence the scope of this $5 milllion study,” she said, “and I welcome anyone who is interested in learning more about the study to our community information session.”
Council has been working with the Cities of Banyule, Darebin, Whittlesea, Manningham, Melbourne, Boroondara, Whitehorse and Maroondah, as well as the Shire of Nillimbuk and the Metropolitan Transport Forum to develop a joint submission.
“By working together with other Councils more detailed research can be commissioned and then used to provide a stronger, more substantiated submission,” she said.
“Council is keen to see improved public transport as a key consideration in this enquiry and will also be making an independent submission to the study to advocate for this.
“We must act quickly to ensure we make the most of our opportunity to shape this vital inquiry. We have only until 31 May to lodge our submission,” she said.
