23 March 2009
The external lights at Yarra City Council’s three Town Halls will be switched off at 8.30pm on Saturday 28 March in support of Earth Hour 2009 and Council is encouraging residents to turn their lights off too.
Council will also be turning off non-essential lights at as many other Council-run buildings as possible and is working with radio station PBS FM, who is hosting a celebration of their 30th Birthday Reunion Party at Fitzroy Town Hall that night, to put a solar powered sound and light system in place during Earth Hour.
Mayor Cr Amanda Stone encouraged local businesses and homes to turn their lights off at 8.30pm on Saturday 28 March.
“We encourage our community to join us in switching off lights to help reach this year’s goal of one billion participants across the globe,” Cr Stone said.
“One of Council’s targets, set by the Yarra Environment Strategy, is to achieve a 25% reduction in greenhouse emissions across the whole community by 2012,” she said.
“Earth Hour demonstrates how much energy can be saved in just one hour by a simple action, turning off lights.
“Our 25% reduction target can be achieved by many simple actions like this, all year round.”
She said that actions residents can take include switching electricity to green power, using energy efficient light globes, turning off lights when leaving the room and switching off appliances and computers rather than leaving them on stand-by.
“If all Australian households turned off unused lights and appliances at the
power point, Australia’s annual emissions would be cut by at least 5 million tonnes (equivalent to taking 1.5 million cars off the road).”
