Yarra City Council is encouraging its community to celebrate its cultural and linguistic diversity during Cultural Diversity Week, from 15 to 21 March.
Multilingual messages will be drawn by chalk artists on footpaths across Yarra to mark Council’s decision to formally join UNESCO’s International Coalition of Cities against Discrimination, a network of cities committed to working together to fight racism, discrimination and exclusion.
Mayor Cr Amanda Stone said joining the Coalition of Cities against Discrimination in Asia and the Pacific was a demonstration of Council’s commitment to addressing racism and encouraging anti-discriminatory practices.
“By joining the Coalition and endorsing its Ten-Point Commitment Plan, Council will share experiences with local authorities from a number of countries across Asia Pacific,” Cr Stone said.
“This will help Council to continue building a more inclusive community in which everyone has an equal opportunity to participate,” she said.
“Nearly 30% of Yarra’s population was born overseas and 33% speak a language other than English at home, making diverse cultural groups an important part of Yarra’s rich social fabric.”
A host of multicultural performers, including Kutcha Edwards, Stiletto Sisters, Gamelan Duo and Manasis School of Greek Dance and Culture, will take to Yarra’s main retail strips at lunchtimes during Cultural Diversity Week next week, to entertain and inform the local community.
The performances will take place from 12.30pm on:
Council is also encouraging people to organise a multicultural Taste of Harmony lunch at their workplace to recognise and celebrate the diversity that exists in Australian workplaces.
Orange ribbons, worn to show support for community harmony, multiculturalism and richness in diversity, will be available at Richmond and Collingwood Town Halls.
