Yarra City Council has received a planning application for redevelopment of the historic Dimmeys building in Swan Street, Cremorne, with the proposal being to retain the clocktower and main façade, and to build a nine-storey apartment building at the rear.
Applicant Richmond Icon Pty Ltd has also separately made an application to Heritage Victoria, as required due to the building’s listing on the Victorian Heritage Register.
Mayor Cr Amanda Stone said Dimmeys was recognised on the Register as being of architectural and historical significance to the state of Victoria.
“Dimmeys is recognised as being of architectural significance as a fine, intact and early example of the American Romanesque style in Victoria,” Cr Stone said.
“As noted in the Heritage Victoria Register, the significance of the building is increased by the clocktower which is a prominent and well-known Melbourne landmark,” she said.
“We know the Dimmeys building is treasured by our local community - as it is by our Council – and we will be working to ensure it retains its integrity.”
Under the application, the clocktower and the existing two-storey Swan Street façade would be retained and refurbished.
The proposal for redevelopment includes:
Cr Stone said Council’s planning officers were assessing the application, and were likely to request more detailed information from the applicant in coming weeks.
Once that information had been provided, Council would put the application on public exhibition, and encourage the local community to have their say on the redevelopment proposal.
