Thousands of Yarra retail businesses will be able to raise security concerns face-to-face with police and council officers under a new business crime prevention initiative launched this week.
Under the partnership between Victoria Police, Yarra City Council and the Neighbourhood Justice Centre, more than 6000 Business Crime Prevention kits will be hand-delivered to the businesses by representatives of all three organisations.
The kits – which include information on how to deal with theft, bomb threats and aggressive people – are being distributed in Bridge Road this week, with businesses in Victoria, Swan, Smith, Gertrude and Brunswick Streets to be visited in coming months.
After kits are progressively delivered to each shopping precinct, a local forum will be held where crime prevention tactics and local crime issues will be discussed.
Mayor Cr Amanda Stone said all three organisations had identified a need to provide more support to local businesses to prevent crime.
“We need a strong, united response to prevent property crime, which accounts for about 80% of all offences committed in Yarra,” Cr Stone said.
Crime Prevention Officer for Region One Leading Senior Constable Mark James said 1000 kits had been translated into Vietnamese to assist Yarra’s many Vietnamese retailers.
‘This kit is a fantastic resource for all businesses - it gives practical crime prevention advice and information on how to deal with many situations involving suspicious and criminal activity,” LSC James said.
Director of the Neighbourhood Justice Centre Kerry Walker said more than 50% of crime in Yarra was committed by people who lived outside Yarra.
“The Business Crime Prevention kits enable local businesses in Yarra to better protect themselves, and their customers, against burglaries, thefts and other crimes,” Ms Walker said.
“The hand-delivery of the kits also provides an opportunity for Victoria Police and council officers to strengthen relations with local business owners, who are often best placed to see what happens in their local street.
“With this kit, businesses are better informed on what to do if they see something illegal or wrong.”
