Yarra City Council is offering residents cut price compost bins plus free mulch throughout May to celebrate Composting Awareness Week.
Compost bins will cost only $25 and will be delivered free to residents. Free mulch is available 7 days a week, depending on demand, outside Council’s Depot on the corner of Roseneath and Gray streets, Clifton Hill (Mel Ref 2D B4).
Mayor Cr Amanda Stone said approximately 50% of rubbish that Yarra residents put in their everyday mixed waste garbage bin could be composted.
“By turning kitchen scraps, garden cuttings and other organic matter into compost we’re minimising the amount of waste going to landfill,” Cr Stone said.
“Plus, much of the greenhouse gas emissions from landfill are the result of decomposing organic matter, which could have been composted at home,” she said.
Residents who would like a reduced price compost bin should contact Yarra City Council on 9205 5555 or visit the Richmond or Collingwood town halls.
