Yarra City Council is encouraging the local community to get involved in Clean Up Australia Day on Sunday 1 March by volunteering at one of the twelve locations across the municipality so far registered as sites.
Council will be providing bags and gloves to volunteers at all registered Clean Up Australia Day sites in Yarra and will make special rubbish collections after the events.
Mayor Cr Amanda Stone urged local residents to take part in Clean Up Australia Day, and to help keep Yarra’s streets and open space litter-free every day.
“We encourage all residents to volunteer some time on 1 March to help clean up Yarra and ensure our parks and open space remain places that everyone can enjoy,” Cr Stone said.
“We urge everybody to do the right thing the whole year round by disposing of rubbish thoughtfully and increasing their recycling,” she said.
“Council works hard to keep Yarra clean 365 days a year through our maintenance of more than 600 street and park litter bins, routine cleaning of all local streets and major shopping strips, and collection of domestic hard and green waste.
“We also have a response team whose job it is to quickly remove graffiti and pick up dumped rubbish.”
Among the Councillors that will be volunteering at Clean Up Australia Day sites in Yarra are Cr Stone (Collingwood Children's Farm), Cr Jackie Fristacky (Carlton Mosque), Cr Alison Clarke (Burnley Park) and Cr Josh Funder (Burnley Oval).
Residents can sign up to volunteer at registered sites in Yarra, or register their own clean-up site, by visiting the Clean up Australia Day website at www.cleanup.com.au. The twelve sites registered to date are:
