How your Christmas tree can keep giving joy…

Yarra City Council is encouraging local residents to register their unwanted Christmas trees for collection, so the trees can be mulched and provide life-support to the city’s parks during Summer.

City of Yarra Mayor Cr Amanda Stone said Council had introduced a specific-Christmas tree collection service this year, whereby registered trees would be picked up from within property lines in the fortnight beginning Monday 19 January 2009.

In previous years, Council had picked up Christmas trees placed on nature strips as part of its normal waste collection services.

“We have decided to introduce a specific collection service for Christmas trees because it is more convenient for our residents,” Cr Stone said.

“Our city streets will be kept cleaner because we won’t have unwanted trees gathering on nature strips, awaiting collection.

“Hopefully, the service will result in more residents disposing of their trees through Council, which will increase the amount of mulch we are able to distribute to the City’s parks and gardens.”

Cr Stone said the Christmas tree collection service was in keeping with the spirit of other changes in Council’s waste collection services, aimed at improving convenience for local residents.

Council last year introduced personalised hard and green waste collection services, which enable residents to book collections at times convenient to them.

Residents are entitled to two free hard waste collections per year, and unlimited green waste collections. When residents contact Council to make a booking, they are provided with a pick-up date and are asked if they are able to place their collection at an agreed place on the night before the pick-up date.

“Our collectors are able to help residents with mobility restrictions by removing waste from within their properties,” Cr Stone said.

“This much-needed assistance was not available under Council’s previous hard waste collection service when residents were required to place their rubbish on the nature strip for pick-up.”

Over the past four months, more than 500 residents per month have used Council’s hard waste collection service, Cr Stone said.

Residents who wish to register their Christmas tree for collection should contact Council on 9205 5555 by Friday 16 January. Hard and green waste collections can be organised by contacting Council on 9205 5555.
