Yarra City Council will proceed with a $6.309 million expansion of the Collingwood Leisure Centre after being informed earlier this week that it had not secured a Federal Government grant.
Mayor Cr Amanda Stone said funding had been requested from the Federal Government’s Regional and Local Community Infrastructure Program to create an outdoor splash pad and leisure water play area, upgrade the reception area and establish a group change area for schools.
“We’re disappointed to have missed out on the federal funding but it is not the end of the world as far as this project is concerned,” Cr Stone said.
“We will now go full steam ahead with our substantial expansion plans, which will be funded by Council and the State Government,” she said.
“These plans include increasing the size of the lap pool and the toddlers’ pool, establishing a new learn to swim pool, and providing access ramp entries into both pools.
“The upgrade also provides for refurbishment of the change rooms, spa and sauna areas and the use of the latest water and energy conservation technologies.”
The estimated project cost of $6.309 million will be met through Council’s capital works program (with $700,000 provided for in Council’s draft 2009/10 budget), and a grant of $1.239 million from the Department of Planning and Community Development.
“The redevelopment is needed to meet the current and future needs of the growing numbers of members, local schools, community groups and other residents who regularly used the pool,” said Cr Stone.
At its meeting on Tuesday night, Council voted to endorse the preparation of a planning permit application to proceed with the works.
If Council grants the permit, work is expected to begin on the Collingwood Leisure Centre redevelopment in February 2010.
