Support for our fellow Victorian communities

Yarra City Council is profoundly upset by the loss of life, homes and animals in February’s horrific bushfires. Mayor Cr Amanda Stone said Council had sent messages of support to all affected municipalities.

Council will be making a donation of $25,000 towards the bushfire appeals, and has also provided staff (such as Environmental Health Officers) to assist the Shire of Wellington and the City of Whittlesea in recovery efforts.

Council is also helping facilitate this local fundraising event:

Gala Art Auction
A Gala Art Auction is set to be held at the Fitzroy Town Hall on Thursday 21 May, with all monies raised from the auction going towards the Gippsland Emergency Relief Fund.

The auction was initiated by the artists of Gippsland, and is being supported by the City of Yarra, the Shire of Wellington, Leonard Joel art auctioneers and many others.

We will provide more information about this event as it becomes available. To donate artworks for auction, please contact Council’s Arts and Culture Unit on 9205 5555.

What else can Yarra Residents Do?

Give to Bushfire Emergency Appeals
We know many Yarra residents will want to help and we encourage local residents to make donations to the Bushfire Emergency appeals that have been established.

Online donations can be made securely here.
Donations can be made at branches of the National Australia Bank, ANZ, Commonwealth Bank, Westpac and Bendigo Bank. Donations can also be made at any Bunnings store or Australia Post outlet.

Consumer Affairs Victoria has warned of bogus bushfire charities. A list of registered bushfire charities is at available on the Consumer Affairs Victoria website.

Volunteer your time or services
People wishing to volunteer their time or services should contact Go Volunteer on 1300 366 356 or register at www.govolunteer.com.a

Organise to donate blood
The Red Cross is not currently calling for Emergency Blood Donors. However, people who would like to donate blood should visit the Red Cross website www.redcross.org.au or call 13 14 95 and make an appointment to donate blood in the days and weeks ahead to help ensure blood stock remains at a safe level.

Organise a fundraising activity
If you want to hold a fundraiser, please read and follow the requirements of Red Cross the community fundraising kit, downloadable below. Please fill out part A and fax back to your local Red Cross office and a member of the team will contact you as soon as they are able. Please be patient -- as you can imagine the number of support offers is very high.

Offers of housing and accommodation
The Victorian Bushfire Public Accommodation donation line is coordinating donations of billeting/housing and accommodation within Victoria. In particular, donations of caravans available for up to 12 months and longer are encouraged as these allow people to stay close to their communities when these areas are declared safe to return. Please call 1800 006 468.

Donate food or goods
Corporate donations of food can be made to VicRelief Foodbank on 03 9362 8300. Clothing and household goods donations can be made at any Salvo's Family Store or Brotherhood of St Laurence Community Store, or a charity in your area.

Offer your condolences in official message books
Victorians can offer their condolences to those affected by the bushfires and show support for emergency services workers by signing official message books. The books are available for signing during normal business hours at the offices of local Members of Parliament.

Animal welfare
The Department of Primary Industries (DPI) is responsible for animal welfare response and recovery activities with the support of the RSPCA and Department of Sustainability and Environment.

To make fodder donations for livestock, contact the Victorian Farmers Federation: 1300 882 833.
To make pet food donations, contact your local RSPCA

Regular updates will be provided
We will update this page regularly to make sure we keep the Yarra community updated in coming weeks and months about additional ways in which we can help our fellow Victorians get through this terrible time.
