Yarra gets big tick on its investment in bicycle infrastructure

Bicycle Victoria has praised the City of Yarra as “leading the way” amongst Victorian inner city councils in its investment in bicycle infrastructure.

In its second annual BIXE index, the lobby group found that - in terms of expenditure on bicycle infrastructure - Yarra was the best performing inner city council and the third best of the 46 councils surveyed statewide.

The index compiles a per capita spending figure for each council, which is determined by dividing the bike-related expenditure in each council budget by the number of residents in the municipality.

City of Yarra Mayor Cr Amanda Stone said the index found the Council would spend $16.84 per resident on bicycle infrastructure – including routes and networks, lanes and paths, bike parking and other facilities – in the 2008/2009 financial year.

She said Yarra’s result was three times the minimum standard set by Bicycle Victoria for local governments to spend $5 per resident.

“The City of Yarra aims to be the most cyclist-friendly city in Australia, and we are pleased to be acknowledged by Bicycle Victoria for the efforts we are making,” Cr Stone said.

She said Council had improved on its performance compared to last year when it was estimated to be spending $4.49 per resident. While Council believed last year’s figure was artificially low due to some bike-related expenditure not being clearly identified in its budget, it was nonetheless true that Council had stepped up its efforts, she said.

“Concerns about the impact cars have on our city’s liveability mean we are making a deliberate effort to provide good alternative transport options for our residents and visitors,” Cr Stone said.

“The growing number of cyclists within Yarra shows we are on the right track,” she said.

“We’re going to continue to increase our investment in cycling, as one part of the solution to the huge car-related congestion and pollution burden that the inner city is experiencing.”

Cr Stone said bike-related projects which would be funded by Council this financial year included:
