Students from ten schools across Yarra will be using pedal power and walking willpower instead of being driven in cars as part of Council’s Walk, Stride, Roll, Ride program.
The initiative aims to raise awareness of the physical, social, environmental and economic benefits of using active transport, such as walking and bikes.
Walk, Stride, Roll, Ride starts off on Ride to School Day, Wednesday 25 March 2009, and will continue until Walk Safely to School Day on Friday 15 May 2009.
The aim of the project is to record the number of kilometres students walk, ride, scoot, or rollerblade to school. Students will tally the number of kilometres they ride or walk over the 28 school days involved. Each school’s total will then be divided by the number of participating students to provide a kilometres per student result. The top three schools, in terms of kilometres per student result, will be awarded with prizes for their winning efforts.
Mayor Cr Amanda Stone said Walk, Stride, Roll, Ride provided a fantastic opportunity to educate children and their families about the benefits of sustainable transport.
“There are many benefits, for both the individual and the community, associated with more people regularly using sustainable modes of transport,” Cr Stone said.
“Students who walk or cycle all or part of the way to school are more physically active and therefore healthier than those who are dropped off right at the gate,” she said.
“Studies have shown that students who participate in active travel to and from school are more alert and receptive to learning and have healthier lifestyles as they get older.
“Other benefits include reduced traffic and increased safety on local roads, particularly around peak school hour times and lower amounts of localised air pollution from car fumes emitted into the atmosphere.
“We are also encouraging schools to incorporate the active transport theme into various areas of the curriculum to reinforce the benefits of using sustainable transport and keeping active.
“All participating schools will receive $200 towards the costs associated with running and promoting the program. A number of pedometers will also be provided to assist students with the calculation of distances covered.
“On behalf of Council, I would like to congratulate the participating schools for their involvement and encourage students to get walking, striding, rolling and riding!”
