Singer Archie Roach to help launch project celebrating Yarra’s Aboriginal cultural history

The City of Yarra is encouraging local community members to come along to the launch of an important project commemorating Yarra’s Aboriginal history and culture next month.

The project, Aboriginal History of Fitzroy Plaques and Places, will be launched by City of Yarra Mayor, Cr Amanda Stone, and Archie Roach on Thursday 5 February 2009 in the park of Fitzroy’s Atherton Gardens Housing Estate.

In line with the City of Yarra’s Aboriginal Partnerships Plan, the plaques project honours historically significant Aboriginal organisations and meeting places along Gertrude Street and surrounding areas.

By the time of the launch, fifteen bronze plaques will have been installed and a walking trail map released, enabling locals, tourists and historians to take a self-guided tour through Fitzroy and learn more about Yarra’s Indigenous past.

The site of the project’s launch, Atherton Gardens, was an important meeting place in the 1980s for homeless Aboriginal people as well as other Aboriginal people visiting from interstate.

Singer/songwriter Archie Roach was once part of this community, and will be making a special appearance to perform some of the songs inspired by his time in and around the streets of Fitzroy.

City of Yarra Mayor, Cr Amanda Stone, said Council hoped the plaques project would lead to more local stories being told, collected and celebrated.

“We believe it is important that the Yarra community continues to acknowledge and celebrate the contribution the local Indigenous community has made to Yarra,” Cr Stone said.

“This acknowledgment is an important part of working towards Reconciliation at a local level.”
