Yarra City Council is seeking feedback on a proposal to lower speed limits to 40 kph on all local streets in Fitzroy, following the introduction of the lower speed limit across other Yarra precincts.
Mayor Cr Amanda Stone said a 40 kph speed limit now applied on all local streets in Richmond, Cremorne and Burnley, and in parts of Clifton Hill, Alphington, Abbotsford, North Fitzroy and Fitzroy.
A 40 kph limit already applies in one Fitzroy precinct (bounded by Gertrude, Smith, Brunswick and Johnston Sts), and is now being proposed for the remaining local streets in the suburb.
Cr Stone said as Council had progressively undertaken Local Area Traffic Management projects in local precincts over the past five years, local residents had been asked whether they supported a 40 kph speed limit.
“The feedback we are receiving is overwhelmingly positive – our residents want the lower speed limit because it is safer for everybody, especially pedestrians, cyclists, children and older people,” Cr Stone said.
Before a 40 kph limit can be introduced, Council must implement traffic calming measures that reinforce the lower limit, and then apply to VicRoads for approval.
Once VicRoads gives approval, Council puts up 40 kph signs at all entry points from major boundary roads into the precinct where the speed limit applies.
The lower speed limit doesn’t apply on major roads in Yarra, except on those for which VicRoads has already introduced the 40 kph speed limit:
Bridge Road, Richmond (from Burnley St to Punt Rd, between 7am to midnight)
Brunswick Street Fitzroy (from Gertrude St to Alexandra Pde, permanent)
Johnston Street Fitzroy (from Brunswick St to Mason Lane, 7am to 3am)
Smith Street Fitzroy (from Langridge St to Johnston St, permanent)
Swan Street Richmond (from Church St to Punt Rd, 7am to midnight)
Cr Stone said Yarra was pleased to be at the forefront of introducing the lower speed limit, as it improved residential safety and amenity.
“Yarra has many local streets where driving at a walking pace is common practice for residents, due to the narrow street width, traffic calming treatments, proximity of parked cars, and driver awareness of young families in the vicinity,” Cr Stone said.
“A 40kph speed limit reinforces the practical and safe maximum speed in these local streets,” she said.
“A lower speed limit is much safer for pedestrians and cyclists, with studies showing a pedestrian is four times more likely to be killed if struck by a car travelling at 50 kph than at 40 kph.
“A safer environment encourages more people to walk and ride, and that is good for their health and for our environment.”
Fitzroy residents who live in the precincts covered by the proposed LATMs (one bounded by Nicholson, Johnston and Smith Streets, and Alexandra Parade and the other bounded by Nicholson, Johnston and Smith Streets and Victoria Parade) are encouraged to provide feedback to Traffic Engineer Noel Wootten on 9205 5742.
