In early October 2009, Council started construction work on a streetscape improvement and public art project at the intersection of Stanley & Smith Streets.
This project will add to the character and appearance of Smith Street, while also improving pedestrian safety. Here is an overview of the project. ![]()
The pedestrian crossover at the intersection will be raised, the asphalt footpaths resheeted, and new sawn bluestone kerbs, new native street trees, a drinking fountain and bike hoops introduced. The alignment of the kerbs will not change and no carpark spaces will be removed.
Internationally-renowned Melbourne artist Glenn Romanis will create the artwork on the space outside the TAB. This artwork will be based on an aerial view of Smith Street and its surrounds, including the Yarra River and Merri Creek. Using inlaid stone, the artwork will map the local sites of past and present Aboriginal significance. Three new stone seats will be integrated into the artwork. Here is an artwork interpretation.![]()
The construction work is expected to take about two months to complete. Local residents and businesses will continue to have access to their properties, with works undertaken in stages to minimise inconvenience to local residents and businesses.
The intersection of Stanley and Smith Streets will need to be closed for a few days for the raised pedestrian works. Council’s contractor will notify affected individual properties a few days in advance of this closure. Restrictions on parking and loading/ unloading near the construction work will apply. For more information about the construction work, please contact Darul Islam, Council’s Senior Engineer, on 9205 5748 or Graham Warner, Project Officer, on 0418 138 636.
This project is part of the Smith Street Structure Plan, adopted by Council in November 2008, which recommended the enhancement of the character of Smith Street through urban design and public art, while also improving pedestrian activity.
Council sought community feedback on the proposed project in May/June 2009, after which Council approved the project at its July 2009 meeting. Here is a copy of the report and minutes.![]()
