Significant changes have occurred in the structure and trends in industrial and business activities throughout the City of Yarra over the last 10 – 15 years. The City has transformed from business areas traditionally dominated by manufacturing industries employing a large proportion of the local workforce, to a sought after location for smaller and medium sized business services and new businesses (particularly in the emerging growth areas such as finance and insurance, property and business services and health services).
Concentrations of business service activities such as finance and insurance, property and health services are forming in the City, and generally have outperformed similar business activities in the rest of metropolitan Melbourne in the period 1996 – 2001.
Independent planning and property consultants have recently completed a review of the industrial and business activities in the City of Yarra and a draft report, dated September 2004, has been completed which outlines the study’s findings and key recommendations. The proposed changes to the planning provisions managing such activity throughout Yarra as recommended in the report, including possible rezonings of industrial and business land, would take place in the medium to long term and would generally be initiated by the owner of the land with involvement from the local community, consistent with the findings and recommendations of the review.
The Yarra Industrial and Business Land Strategy Review, September 2004 was adopted by Council on 14 June 2005 subject to conditions.
