Before beginning any building works you must determine if you require a planning permit. Sketch a map of your proposal, record the address details and make an appointment with one of Council's planning officers to determine if you require a planning permit.
After receiving your planning permit (or even if you do not require one) you must apply for a building permit.
You may obtain a building permit from the building surveyors at the City of Yarra, or through private building surveyors.
To obtain a building permit through Council, simply contact the City of Yarra on 9205 5095 and request an application form. Please allow 10 working days for the permit to be assessed and processed. When all requirements are met, a permit will be issued by mail. Fees apply.
Inspections may be required at various stages through your building works. To check the stages when an inspection is needed telephone the City of Yarra's Building Services department on 9205 5095.
Before occupying or using the building works you must apply for a Certificate of Occupancy or Final Inspection. To book an inspection time, telephone the City of Yarra's Building Services department on 9205 5095.
You may also contact a Private Building Surveyor to obtain a building permit. This Building Surveyor will address all your building permit requirements. Please contact the Building Surveyor with any queries.
