Look at this Process to determine whether you need a building permit for your fence.
Take a scale drawing of the proposed fence, (preferably draftsman drawn) indicating height and materials to be used in the construction.
An appointment can be made by calling Yarra Building Services on 9205 5095.
How do I organise a side/rear fence?
This is a civil matter controlled by the Fences Act 1968 and is outside Council's jurisdiction. You should discuss the matter with your neighbour or write them a letter.
If you need to know the adjoining property owners details please apply in writing to Yarra Building Services, PO Box 168 Richmond, 3121. Contact the Dispute Settlement Service as a last resort.
Where a fence is located in an area where heritage overlay controls apply, a planning permit is required.
When you have submitted your Building Permit and all requirements are met, generally allow 10 working days for the permit to be assessed.
