Yarra welcomes countdown to the 2014 International Aids Conference

02 December 2013

Yarra will welcome visitors from across the globe next July as thousands of people travel to Melbourne for the 20th International AIDS Conference.

The six day event is expected to attract 14,000 delegates from nearly 200 countries.

Billed as the largest health conference in the world, the International AIDS Conference is the premier gathering for those working in the field of HIV.

As a countdown to the conference officially began yesterday to mark World AIDS Day, Yarra Mayor Jackie Fristacky said Council was looking forward to hosting its international guests as the event’s official social hub.

“There are more same sex attracted people living in Yarra than any other municipality in the state so we think Yarra will provide a welcoming environment for conference delegates to relax and unwind,” Cr Fristacky said.

“The conference will also allow people living with AIDS in Yarra to access events aimed at advancing our collective awareness about the health and social impacts of HIV.”

Cr Fristacky said local businesses were well positioned to benefit from the conference’s diverse program of professional and social events.

“The Melbourne Conventions and Visitors Bureau has tipped the conference to generate $84 million for the Victorian economy so this will be an excellent opportunity to showcase Yarra’s world class selection of dining, entertainment and shopping to visitors,” Cr Fristacky said.

“Council has partnered with the conference organisers and Living Positive Victoria to promote Yarra as the conference’s official social hub.

“We are encouraging local businesses to register with the social hub’s website so delegates arriving next year can find them when they are out exploring Melbourne.”

The International AIDS Conference 2014 runs from Sunday 20 July to Friday 25 July.
