A helping hand to restore heritage buildings
1 Oct 2010 Edition
Now is a good time for heritage home owners in Yarra to give their place a facelift.
Council has joined with the Melbourne Heritage Restoration Fund (MHRF) to offer grants and low interest loans to owners of Yarra’s much-loved heritage buildings.
Eligible applicants could receive up to 50% of the cost of restoring their building to its original state. Works could include the replacement of a modern tiled roof with original slates or even the reinstatement of a missing verandah.
MHRF will assess the individual merits of each application, and then decide the level of grant funding to be provided towards the costs. Low interest loans are also available.
To be eligible:
- The building must be subject to a Heritage Overlay
- The works must be visible from the public domain so the whole community benefits from the restoration
- The works must restore or reinstate original features.
The funding aims to assist land owners to conserve and restore their heritage homes for the enjoyment of the wider community.
Assistance is not available for routine repairs and maintenance, for works to interiors or for works that have already commenced or have been completed.
