IPAA Award highlights Yarra Council’s commitment to health and safety

19 February 2016

Improvements driven by Yarra City Council’s Occupational Health and Safety Strategic Plan have been recognised with a prestigious Leadership in the Public Sector Award.

Presented by the Institute of Public Administration Australia, the awards highlight “excellence in the practice and study of public administration, government and related disciplines”. Yarra was successful in the key category of ‘Leading the Way in Health, Safety and Wellbeing’.

Yarra Council Acting Chief Executive Officer Ivan Gilbert said, “We’ve achieved some outstanding results, including a 46% reduction in injury frequency and a 55% reduction in days lost due to injury.”

“Workplace safety is major priority for all employers and this award is great recognition of the progress we’ve made since launching our new OHS Strategic Plan in 2014.”

Implementation of the new OHS Strategic Plan involved a comprehensive overhaul of OHS policies, management systems, working groups, governance and reporting mechanisms.

“These improvements have resulted in a 50% reduction in WorkCover claim costs and a 40% reduction in Council’s WorkCover premium.”

Yarra Mayor Roberto Colanzi congratulated Council officers on their work in winning this award and said: “The new approach by Council officers is delivering better value for ratepayers and a safer and more productive workplace for employees”.
