Council saves $400,000 on WorkCover premium

29 October 2015

Yarra City Council has won a major award at the prestigious WorkSafe Awards, taking home the Employer Excellence Award for Return to Work category.

Council achieved stellar results including a 40 per cent reduction in standard WorkCover claims, translating to a $400,000 saving in its annual premium. This was achieved by engaging in a multitude of pro-active methods to reduce both workplace injuries and to assist injured workers in rehabilitation and returning to work, in the past year.

In addition, Council also had a 55 per cent reduction in lost time days due to injuries and a 46 per cent reduction in injury occurrence rates.

The Awards, which celebrate individuals and employers who have demonstrated a significant contribution to workplace health and safety in Victoria, recognise the outstanding work of Council in helping injured workers return to work.

City of Yarra Mayor, Cr Phillip Vlahogiannis said this latest achievement was testament to Council's commitment to both staff and the community and the importance Council plays in Occupational Health and Safety.

"As a Council we aim to continually improve the level of service to our community, and having a healthy and safe workforce is a key ingredient in achieving this. Over and above this, a very welcome bonus is that we have saved a significant amount of money on our insurance premium.

"I congratulate each and every member of Yarra staff for their contribution to reducing injuries and staying safe and healthy so that they can continue to do the great work they do for our community."
