Ramsden Pavilion gets go ahead

18 April 2011

New-ramsden-street-pavilionConstruction of a Clifton Hill sporting pavilion could start in late 2011 after Council last week approved plans for the pavilion.

Yarra Mayor Alison Clarke said Council’s Internal Development Approvals Committee had issued a Notice of Decision to Grant a Planning Permit for the pavilion.

She said the pavilion would be built in Ramsden Street reserve, on the same site as an existing 1940s pavilion which was to be demolished.

“Sport can’t be beaten as a means of keeping our residents healthy and socially connected,” Cr Clarke said.

“We’re pleased to provide a new pavilion in Clifton Hill, as we have in Burnley and North Fitzroy in recent times,” she said.

“The old pavilion is well past its use-by-date - it doesn’t provide access for people with disabilities and it wasn’t built to today’s safer building standards.”

The pavilion would be used by the same clubs which use the existing pavilion – the Clifton Hill Cricket Club, Fitzroy Junior Football Club and Fitzroy Reds Football Club.

Cr Clarke said the pavilion would be made available for hire by local not-for-profit clubs or organisations during daytime hours. At night, the pavilion may be used by the sporting clubs for social or other functions, but it won’t be made available for hire for private parties.

She said the pavilion was expected to cost about $1.3 million, with some funding having already been allocated this financial year and the majority of the funding being included in Council’s Proposed 2011/2012 Budget.

She said Council had made several changes to the original design to accommodate feedback received from local residents, but there had still been 11 objections to the permit application.

“Some local residents would have preferred that the pavilion be moved to another section of the reserve further away from their homes,” Cr Clarke said.

“That option was considered, but Council decided the existing location should be kept for several reasons, including that it is closer to the cricket nets and car parking,” she said.

“We have sought to minimise any noise impact on residents by taking several measures such as positioning the function room in the section of the pavilion that is furthest away from homes.”
