Yarra joins the Garage Sale Trail

24 March 2011

Council is encouraging Yarra residents to clean out their cupboards or pick up a bargain at next month’s Garage Sale Trail.

On Sunday 10 April, people in Yarra, other parts of Melbourne and three other states will hold simultaneous garage sales.

Launched in Sydney last year, the Garage Sale Trail comes to Yarra for the first time in 2011, promising a day for trash and treasure hunters to savour.

Yarra Mayor Alison Clarke said the event aimed to show how simple it was for goods to be re-used rather than sent to landfill.

Cr Clarke said there were plenty of upsides to the community getting together to exchange their pre-loved possessions.

“One person’s dilapidated couch can be another person’s design classic so, whatever your style, it’s worth getting involved,” Cr Clarke said.

“You can either host your own garage sale or hunt around the ones being held.

“I still regret selling a green suede coat that I picked up at a garage sale so I’ve got my fingers crossed that it might show up again at someone’s sale next month.

“Aside from the bargains and the benefits of reducing landfill and illegal dumping, days like this are a great opportunity for people to get out and meet their neighbours.”

Shoppers looking to bag those bargains can log onto  and browse the registered garage sales by postcode or by item.

Yarra residents can register their garage sales for free on the Garage Sale Trail map at, in preparation for the 10 April event.

Free Garage Sale Trail packs containing a t-shirt, cap, poster for your garage sale and balloons can be collected by event participants at the Richmond and Collingwood town halls.
