Yarra Energy Foundation opens for business

15 April 2011

The Yarra community now has a new champion for carbon reduction, with the  launch of the Yarra Energy Foundation.

One of its first projects will be bringing expertise and technology to retrofit Yarra’s housing estates to make them more energy efficient.

Yarra Mayor Alison Clarke said the Foundation would be similar to the Moreland Energy Foundation, which had helped residents and businesses in neighbouring Moreland reduce wasteful energy use and save money on their power bills.

“Soon after the election of this Council in 2008, we realised we needed help in delivering the massive promise of making Yarra carbon neutral by 2020,” Cr Clarke said.

“We needed an organisation that could focus solely on achieving that goal.

“Our Council works hard to promote behaviour change in the community but the reality is that we need organisations like the YEF to really drive home the big changes needed.

“We’re looking forward to working closely with the Energy Foundation to make Yarra more sustainable for this generation and many more to come.”

Council has so far committed $600,000 towards the set up of the YEF as an independent organisation and intends to commit a further $600,000 over the next two financial years.
