Council tunes in to musicians' parking needs
14 October 2010
A Yarra City Council plan to waive parking restrictions in front of live venues will be music to the ears of Yarra musicians.
Later this year, Council will begin issuing parking permits to all live music venues in Yarra to allow musicians to temporarily park in loading zones while they unload their equipment.
Venues will be invited to apply for the permits, the number of which will be determined based on the parking facilities available at each location.
Yarra Mayor Cr Jane Garrett said the temporary permits were a simple and practical solution to a problem that has plagued musicians working in the inner city.
“Musicians who need to unload equipment regularly run the risk of losing a large proportion of their income to parking fines,” she said.
“Yarra’s live music scene is nationally regarded and makes important contributions to our city so we want to ensure we are doing all we can to support those who keep that scene strong.”
Later this month, Council will also begin installing permanent display boards in Smith Street for people to legally paste up posters to promote shows and events.
Identifying other suitable locations in Yarra for more bill poster boards will be one of the tasks of Council’s newly formed Live Music Working Group.
