Film Resources at Yarra Libraries

Online databases

Our library service subscribes to several databases. Just go to online resources to have a look.

Online reviews

To find online reviews choose the Proquest database. Choose the option at the bottom More Search Options. In the Article type choose Movie review. It may also be best to limit your search to full text articles by checking the box. You can also limit your search by time and publication.

Searching our catalogue

To find audio visual items on our catalogue, you can use a number of search terms but remember the library has a vast range of videos and dvds. Try using the terms videorecording and dvd as keyword searching. It is better to search by a specific title.

New items

Keep up to date with our new items by selecting our new items listings.

Film Books and Biographies

Search for movie books by using key word subjects such as films or movies. Most libraries will have reference books on movies such as:

The following dewey numbers in the adult non-fiction and reference sections of your library are where most of the reference books about film can be found:

Biographies / autobiographies about film actors/actresses are located in the biography section under the Dewey number B791.43028. Try searching the catalogue under subject, and put in the name of the actor/actress you are interested in. Our biographies range from Julia Roberts to Russell Crowe and many more besides.

100 great film performances you should remember, but probably don't. by Dileo, John

Film Related Magazines

We subscribe to a diverse range of magazines related to film, some of which have been just recently added to our subscriptions. Other more run of the mill type magazines such as Who Weekly will also now and then have interesting interviews with actors and actresses.

Film Tie-ins

Recently there have been a plethora of these, from Balzac and the Little Chinese Seamstress to Rabbitproof Fence. Mostly you will find them in the fiction section, unless they are based on a true story. Try searching under title on the catalogue.

Try the following sites too:

Fiction into Film List

Based on the Book

Books Made Into Movies

Guidebooks related to films

These can be found at various numbers in the non-fiction. You can find them by looking under the title of the film in subject in the catalogue. For example, if you type in The Lord of the Rings you will get a list of several great film guides. You will also get the same items by entering the title in the title part of the catalogue, but this will bring up all of the actual novels as well.
