North Fitzroy Community Hub
The North Fitzroy Community Hub is one of Council’s priority projects, many years in the making.
The community hub will feature a library, maternal and child health centre, Council customer service area, community meeting spaces and a rooftop garden.
The facility will be located at 182 St Georges Road, in the heart of North Fitzroy's shopping and dining precinct.
Construction of the hub
Council has appointed building contractor Buxton Constructions to construct the hub. Construction is beginning in late September and is expected to take about 16 months. Council expects that the building will be complete by December 2016 and the hub will be open to the public in early 2017.
Council is providing regular newsletter updates to local residents and businesses:

What will be happening at the site?
In the initial stages of theconstruction, the builders will erect hoarding around the site. Site sheds will be established in Best Street. To accommodate this, Best Street will be made one-waybetween Alfred Crescent and StGeorges Road. Council has plans for long term improvements to Best Street, for more information, visit the Urban Design for Best Street webpage.
Council recognises that the North Fitzroy Village area is a busy precinctand will work to minimise disruptionfor residents, business operators, visitors and the local school community during construction. The building contractor is required to submit an EnvironmentalManagement Plan to Councilfor approval before work can commence. The plan outlines howthe builder will work to minimise noise and dust generated by the construction, how rubbish fromthe site will be managed and how potential run off from site will be controlled.
In the coming months, the contractor will need to undertake excavation of part of the site in orderto lay the foundations for the building. It is anticipated that duringthese ground works there will bea need to hammer through rock insome areas. The digging will last for two to three weeks and is expected to begin in December 2015. This stage of the works willcause a significant level of noise and vibrations.
Residents and businesses will be notified prior to these ground works beginning. Council will beproviding more information about what the works will entail and theexpected impacts as these details are confirmed.Council appreciates this stage of works will be disruptive and will aimto complete the works as quickly as possible during approved working hours.

Construction of the community hub is permitted to take place between 7am and 6pm on weekdays.
Weekend work is not expected to be required for the majority of the construction period. If works doneed to occur, they will be restricted to Saturdays from 9am to 3pm.
Impacts on traffic
Access to footpaths and roads will beaffected throughout the constructionperiod. The local community will benotified prior to any major temporarytraffic changes or detours beingimplemented. The building contractor is requiredto submit a Traffic Management Plan (TMP) for approval by Council beforeworks can commence.
Access to businesses and residential properties
