Since our last update in early August 2009, Council has made good progress in opening up Victoria Park to the community and making it more suitable for recreational use.
Council has allocated $1.85 million this financial year towards improving the park, in line with the Master Plan approved by Heritage Victoria in late 2008.
One of the major improvements will be the removal of the Rush Stand roof, with demolition works expected to get underway from Wednesday 4 November 2009.
These works are expected to take up to five weeks, and will result in a temporary reduction of parking spaces along the north side of Turner Street for up to five days during the course of the works.
As part of the works, Council will need to replace the park’s floodlighting, as much of it is erected on the roof of the Rush Stand. Council has selected four replacement floodlights that will result in less light spilling into surrounding areas than emitted by the existing floodlights. The lights are expected to be installed in January/February 2010.
If you would like to know more details about the floodlights or the demolition works, please contact Richard Young, Project Manager, on 9205 5712 or at Richard.young@yarracity.vic.gov.au
Council has also developed a vision for the future integrated use of the park’s grounds, buildings and infrastructure including the vacant former Social Club building, after taking on board feedback from local residents.
Council will call for Expressions of Interest in occupancy and use of the Social Club in early November 2009, with six weeks to be provided for interested parties to submit a tender.
