Our team of coaches plan and conduct each session to be specific to the yearly training plan, which is based on the five phase periodisation model. Training is structured to progressively build stamina, strength and speed for all abilities.
Swim Squad
Yarra Multisport’s swim squads are attended by triathlete, open water, masters and recreational swimmers. Swimmers need to supply their own goggles and drink bottle and while having your own swimming equipment is encouraged, Yarra Leisure is able to provide a limited number of pull buoys and fins. There is no pressure to stay for the full 1.5 hours if you have work/other commitments or if you have just recently started squad.
Venue: Fitzroy Swimming Pool and Richmond Recreation Centre
Duration: 1.5 hours
Intermediate Swim Squad
The intermediate swim squad is suitable for novice squad swimmers, particularly those who have recently completed Yarra Multisport’s Stroke Correction and Try-a-Tri courses. This session runs for one hour and is conducted at a slower pace than Yarra’s other swim squads. While the primary focus for the intermediate swim squad will be technique development, secondary aims include building stamina, speed and strength. Swimmers need to supply their own goggles and drink bottle and while having your own swimming equipment is encouraged, Yarra Leisure is able to provide pull buoys and fins.
Venue: Richmond Recreation Centre (Thursdays 6.30pm)
Duration: 1 hour
Open Water Swim
There is no substitute for open water swimming practice. Conducted at Elwood beach with adequate water safety, the open water swim squad works on sighting, technique, breathing, porpoising and wading. Swimmers must bring a brightly coloured swim cap and while a wetsuit is strongly advised, it is not essential. A highlight is the weekly handicap swim to conclude the session. THIS SQUAD ONLY RUNS DURING SUMMER.
Venue: Elwood Beach
Duration: 1.5 hours
Ergo
Yarra Multisport’s ergo sessions are conducted on the indoor bikes at Fitzroy. Sessions consist of cycling/triathlon specific intervals and work rates planned by the coaches to be specific to the current phase of the periodisation model. Ongoing technical feedback is also provided. You don’t have to be a triathlete or cyclist to attend this class; you might just want a tougher workout than spin!
Venue: Fitzroy Swimming Pool
Duration: (1.5 hours)
Cycle
Yarra Multisport’s cycle squad uses the safe roads of Kew Boulevard to deliver sessions for both beginners and experienced riders. The sessions focus on strength maintenance and improving riding fitness, handling skills and gear selection. Participants meet at the teardrop circuit off Studley Park Road, where one coach takes a beginners group and another takes an advanced group. You will need your bike, helmet, drink bottle and suitable cycling attire. THIS SQUAD ONLY RUNS DURING SUMMER.
Venue: Kew Boulevard
Duration: Novices (1 hour). Advanced (1.5 hours)
Brick
A ‘brick’ session provides the rare opportunity to simulate race conditions during training. On Tuesday mornings at Fitzroy, participants complete combinations of swimming in the pool, cycling in the ergo room and running in the park next door to the centre. On Saturday mornings at Kew, participants complete run and ride combinations, with transition practice also frequently incorporated into the sessions. Brick sessions are one of the most important training sessions for triathletes.
Venue: Kew Boulevard
Duration: 1 hour
Run Squad
Run squads take advantage of the local parks and ovals that surround the Collingwood and Richmond centres. Locations include St James Park, Fitzroy Gardens, the MCG and Yarra Bend. Sessions can include long run, interval, strength or speed sessions, depending on the time of year and training phase. All levels of ability are catered for.
Venue: Collingwood Leisure Centre
Duration: 1 hour
Track Run
Yarra Multisport’s weekly track session is an off-site session conducted at Collingwood Athletics Track. Conducted by a qualified run coach, the session aims to build running speed, technique and to teach athletes to ‘pace’. Speed work is an important component of your run training all year round.
Venue: Collingwood Athletics Track (off Heidelberg Rd)
Duration: 1 hour
